Generations Growing in Faith

Then you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and have your rise from them, O my people!

- Ezekiel 37:13

This weekend we welcome our second graders from our school and our parish school of religion to the table of the Lord for the first time.  For the past two years we have given the parents the choice of having their children receive with a group on Saturday morning or to receive with the family at one of the weekend Masses.  This is an important event in the life of our parish.  Occasions like this remind us of our own first communions.  We recall those days of past innocence.  I suspect some adults are reluctant to come to the table of the Lord because those days of innocence are long gone.  May I remind you that the Eucharist is not a reward for being innocent but rather food for the journey.  Why else would we pray, “Oh Lord I am not worthy that you should come under my roof…..”

Please pray for our first communicants.  Pray that God’s gift of Jesus in the Eucharist will nourish them and sustain them throughout their lives.  Pray too for their parents that this event will be an occasion of Grace for them.  Pray that they will take seriously their responsibility to provide good example.  If First Communion is just a one time event, parents will have failed their children in their formation as followers of Jesus.  May the parents of our first communicants and all of us come to a new and deeper realization of God’s blessings in our lives and a new and deeper commitment to come together as a parish family on weekends to give thanks and be nourished by the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
